How did we survive?

Humorist Robert G. Lee wrote this in the September edition of Reader’s Digest. How did we survive?  We drank from every garden hose in the neighborhood and now they tell us that it could be a health risk?  According to today’s standard, my entire childhood was a health risk!

When I was a kid, we didn’t have padding under our jungle jims. We had rocks. We didn’t have safety belts on our swing sets. The whole goal was to get as high as you could, then launch yourself into the stratosphere. We rode our bikes without helmets. Without shoes. Sometimes without clothes. We played in creeks, ran through abandoned houses, went dam sliding, jumped on trampolines, ran our go carts straight into oncoming traffic, and played with BB guns, with half the time spent pumping them up cause we’d heard you could take out an eye. We parachuted out of trees with bed sheets, threw lawn jarts at each other, and had no sunblock, so we got burned to a crisp. Summer offically started when the first kid turned as red as a thermometer. Then we had peeling parties. We blew up Barbie dolls with M-80s, we ran with scissors, and our Halloween costumes were made of asbestos. But for safety, our moms made us wait an hour after we ate before we went swimming.

42 years ago this month

The Parade Watcher has been absent for a while, but I promise to be a little more faithful with my postings.  The other day I had a song going through my head and I could not get it out.  It was an instrumental from 1968 called The Horse by Cliff Noble and Company.  What I never realized is that Cliff Noble was a singer and never sang or performed one note on the song.  ‘

The horn section was a little know group called MFSB that would late go on to do their own magic in 1974 with TSOP, The Sound Of Philadelphia.  The vocals on that song were done by The Three Degrees who would have a hit song later that same year "When Will I See Him Again".

Now, back to what happened in June of 1968.  Cliff Noble and Company’s hit song, The Horse, was rising to the top of the charts, but stalled out at number 2.  What kept The Horse from being a number one hit?  Another instrumental by Hugh Masekela called Grazing In The Grass.  One of the few times in the Billboard Hot 100 that an instrumental held down the top two spots.  The summer of 1968.  The summer of instrumentals.

Happy Easter

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter.  The Lenten season comes to a close and a day of celebration comes forth like the spring flowers.  May you enjoy the day with family and friends.

Updates from the Parade

We had a sand bag removal party in the neighborhood last night.  90 minutes and all the sand bags were out in the street ready for the city to pick them up.  A few people are going to have to do some repair work to their yards due to some deep ruts left by the pickup, but I’m sure they will trade that to have the sand bags gone.  Feeling a little sore this morning, especially in the arms and legs.  Don’t do that kind of work every day, and it shows.  Pass the Advil.

Watching the NCAA tournaments on TV and I have been noticing that more and more of the athletes have really gone overboard with the tattoos.  Maybe I have not been paying attention the last few years but I sure don’t remember collegiate basketball players with so many tattoos.  Sorry, but it just makes them look like a human NASCAR.

65 in Fargo yesterday, on March 29.  Might hit 70 today.  May have to tear into the corner of my garage that resembles Fibber Mcgee’s closet and find my grill.  Now that is thinking spring!  Now, big decision, brats or burgers?

Flood photos from north Fargo

Here are some photos from the northside of town.  I took these on Sunday, March 21, 2010.

The bike path under Co. Rd. 20 is now a boat path.

Not sure how high this flag pole is but it is now deep into the Red River.

Might be a while before the horses get back into their home.

The Red River barely clears the bottom of the Co. Rd. 20 bridge. The photo is from the North Dakota side looking over into MN.

The bike path was a little tough to navigate.

Football games called because of high water?  Takes on a new meaning when the quarterback says "Go Deep!".

Monday’s floats in the parade.

Just a couple of things on the radar this morning.

1.  The flu.  Whether it’s the regular flu, or the H1N1 variety; where has it gone?  Maybe it has been replaced in our part of the world with flood coverage, but it went from center-stage to way off the radar.  If nothing else, that is a good thing.

2.  Joe Mauer.  Good for you Joe, and good for the Twins, and good for Twins fans. (such as myself)  Glad this got done before spring training was over.  It would have been a distraction had it continued into the regular season.

3.  Ben Jacobson, UNI Panthers head basketball coach.  Not sure if one victory puts him up there with other North Dakota coaches who have gone on to do great things, but I’ll mention his name along with Lute Olson, Dale Brown, Jud Heathcote, and Phil Jackson.  Good Luck Panthers!

4.  ESPN News.  I was flipping through the channels yesterday and came across ESPN News shortly after the Tiger Woods interview was released.  ESPN News bugled that they were going to run it every 20 minutes.  Instant Nausea and another reason for me to change the channel.

A few floats of note.

1.  The first day of spring:  Spring arrived but it sure doesn’t feel like it.  I’m still wearing my winter coat as the northwest winds are howling and the temp. is barely above the freezing mark.  The Red River is cresting near 37 feet.  I have one eye on my sump pump and the other one on the NCAA and Class B basketball tournaments.  A sure sign of spring in Fargo.

2.  UNI Panthers:  The Panthers of Northern Iowa stun the sports world as they knock off top-seeded Kansas in the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament.  Panther’s head coach, Ben Jacobson, played his high school ball at Mayville-Portland, and helped his team to the state championship in 1987.  Even then he showed he had ice water in his veins as 5 of the 8 teams in that state tournament were undefeated coming in, and he was only a sophomore.  Congrats Ben!  That whirling sound you hear is everyone’s NCAA brackets being shredded after Kansas gets knocked out of the tournament.

3.  Class B Boys Basketball Tournament:  Congrats to the Carrington Cardinals, a hard fought win over Berthold.  The Bombers came roaring back in the final minutes to make a game of it but Carrington hung on for the win.

4.  The Census:  I filled out my census this past week and sent it in.  Hard to believe that there are people out there that think that the census is actually a form of slavery?  I think Stephen Colbert has the best spin on it.

5.  Dale Halferty:  An Industrial Arts teacher in Guthrie Center Iowa, has been put on unpaid leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the school.  It seems that Halferty would not allow a student make a Wiccan Altar in one of his shop classes.  Here’s a story about it.  Keep an eye out for this story as it will be interesting to see how the school handles it.

Sunday Stuff

Could be a long day today.  After attending the Class A Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament in Bismarck the last few days, it feels good to be back home and back in my own bed.  Just wish I could have slept a little longer.  Who’s decision was it to put daylight savings time in the middle of basketball playoffs?  I hope I can keep the yawning to a minimum during church today.  May need that midday power nap.

I must say that I certainly enjoyed being a fan at the basketball tournament instead of being a volunteer at one.  We had a great time out in Bismarck and enjoyed the hospitality at the Bismarck Civic Center.  Congrats to Jim Haussler and the rest of the tournament folks for a job well done.

We got home last night and was amazed at how much snow had melted while we were gone.  The field behind our house has most of the snow melted off of it and is now full of standing water.  I caught just a glimpse of the Red River in the dark last night but I could tell that it had risen quite a bit.  The flood fight is in full gear here and we await to hear what the crest prediction will be and how soon we get there.

Went to the school last night about 11:30pm to pick up my daughter when the team bus pulled into town.  One problem, the bus driver must not have known about the Bon Jovi concert at the Fargodome and the team bus got stuck in the Bon Jovi traffic on 19th Ave. N. and it took them about a half an hour to go from I-29 to the school.  Meanwhile, several parents were yucking it up in the parking lot as we got text messages from our daughters as they were frustrated being so close to home and not being able to get off the bus.

A couple of news and floats in the parade.

A couple of sure signs of spring.  My sump pump is running and the return of the potholes.  Some of the potholes are growing larger by the day.  If nothing else, they keep you on your toes while you are driving as you swerve to miss them.

1.  It’s good to be a grape nut:  A new study says that women who drink wine daily lose weight.  I’ll drink to that.

2.  March Madness continues:  This week it is the ND Class A Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament.  Follow all of the action here

3.  Go directly to Jail:  A man tries to buy drugs using Monopoly money.  You can’t make this stuff up.

Early week floats in the Parade

Entering the week with a couple of floats in the parade that might make you think.

1.  Babies in bars?  Would you believe this is actually being discussed?  A CNN story is getting lots of comment.

2.  A Golf Opener:  What if we had a golf opener like a fishing opener.  The golf courses would only open on a certain day, all on the same day in town.  Would it create as much excitement as the fishing opener?  Could you see the cars lined up with their golf carts like the boats at the ramps?  Just throwing it out there for discussion.

3.  No Cuss Week:  Thank you McKay Hatch, a teenager from South Pasadena CA.  He founded a No Cussing Club in his Junior High.  Now he is working on getting the first week in March as No Cuss Week.  Keep up the good work McKay.

4.  Facebook No-no’s:  When you are going to be named the chief of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service but your wife posts your home address and who your friends are on Facebook.  Oops!  So much for a secret!
